Description
DESCRIPTION Construct and rebuild a variety of difficult and complicated patterns such as multi-stage pumps, complicated pumps or machine parts, jigs and difficult models for development or experimental work. Close fit parts require working to blueprint or diagram dimensions, making necessary shrinkage allowances for the type of metal to be cast. Assemble parts and mount patterns. Build gates and accessory equipment. Responsible for securing satisfactory castings from the pattern and may suggest changes to improve its manufacture. Make core boxes, dryers, pattern layout and match plates. Make difficult repairs. Able to construct the complete range of pump patterns and occasionally check the work of other pattern makers.
Occasional Foundry contact in checking pattern results. Through supervisor may confer with foundry foreman as to corrective measures. May supervise, instruct, or advise Pattern Makers and apprentices in the construction or large and complicated patterns.
Requirements
COMPLEXITY AND JUDGMENT Work is diversified and requires a thorough knowledge of pattern making principles and practices. Considerable judgment is required in developing approaches and adjusting, and in some cases, working without finished measurements and following only a general objective.
EDUCATION Should understand the working principles of pump operation and have a thorough knowledge of foundry methods and practices as well as machine shop practices. Use shop mathematics and handbook formulas. Use ordinary and shrink rules and other measuring instruments. Work from complicated drawings, sketches, and samples.
Equivalent to partial technical high school plus up to four (4) years wood pattern making OJT, apprenticeship, or trade training.
EXPERIENCE Ability to perform the duties of Pattern Maker B and C. Time to move into positions depends on Pattern Maker's ability and learning curve. Time may be sooner; however, can take two (2) to four (4) years.
INITIATIVE Plan details of procedure. Work on own initiative towards objectives, receiving only general direction and guidance. Make decisions within standards widely accepted in the trade.
Unusual problems are referred to supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Mostly light lifting with some occasional moderate to heavy lifting. Moderately heavy job moving patterns and related equipment. Works in standing position; at times requires frequent lifting and handling of medium to large castings. Chain hoists available for lifting heavy work. Some heavy lifting, push/pulling on occasion. Ability to use hand and power tools.
Employees working in this position are required to frequently walk or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS Some conditions are noisy with exposure to wood shavings, dust, heat, and some fumes. Some exposure to outside weather conditions.
Working in the foundry environment is subject to temperatures of heat and cold depending on the season. Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, steel toe shoes, hearing protection, and eye protection.
