Nature of Work This is professional and technical field and office work in the area of industrial safety, loss prevention and vehicle accident prevention. Incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and coordinating a city-wide safety and accident prevention program, that includes: periodic inspection of various facilities, buildings and equipment; reporting detail findings and recommendations for accident prevention purposes, claims review, investigating industrial accidents; and educational training courses for employees and supervisors to prevent on the job injuries.
Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties - Inspects city facilities, buildings and equipment; prepares written reports of field inspections and unsafe conditions; conducts accident investigations (workers compensation and liability)
- Develops and delivers safety training program; conducts new employee safety orientation; recommends safe job practices
- Analyzes entire city safety program and write policies and procedures for compliance with City, state and federal laws
- Verifies the city is in compliance to prevent fines from state, county and federal agencies
- Establishes loss prevention programs for: building, equipment, and employees
- Maintain citywide Accident Review Committee to determine preventability, and to minimize the frequency and severity of future accidents
- Reviews auto liability and property damage claims reports
- Conducts initial liability claims investigations when needed
- Fills in when needed if Risk Manager is not available
- Reviews new state and federal laws applicable to the city; attends county state and federal review panels; recomposes state and federal regulations to meet requirements for implementation by the city
- Performs related work as required
Minimum Requirements - Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Risk and Insurance Management, Safety Engineering, Public or Business Administration
- Three years' experience in safety and loss control programs, including industrial and vehicular accident prevention programs
- Experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis
Physical Requirements: - Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
- Moderate standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling
- Must be able to access a variety of work sites for inspection
