The Position: The City of San Bernardino is seeking a self-starter able to work in a fast-paced environment responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. The Police Dispatcher I (FLEX) perform general and routine dispatching activities. Operates computerized dispatch, radio, "911," and ancillary equipment in a police communications center. Receives, interprets, and codes routine and emergency calls and dispatches personnel and equipment in response following clear policies and protocols.

The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and customer service focused with the ability to learn, develop independence, and respond rapidly to calls. Experience in computer-assisted dispatching and telephone complaint processing is preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D.; AND at least one (1) year of customer service experience working with the public in person, by telephone or in radio communications; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Police Dispatcher I may be considered for advancement to Police Dispatcher II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class as described in established performance criteria. Typically, a Police Dispatcher I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a 12-month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Police Dispatcher II duties.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements : A valid California driver's license is required. Typing speed of 30 words per minute is required.

Successful completion of P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher course is required within 12 months of date of employment. Peace Officers currently employed at the San Bernardino Police Department who have satisfactorily completed a one-year probation may submit a copy of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in lieu of completing the P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Course.

Supplemental Information

City Benefits: The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:

  • Retirement - Participation in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Employees hired on or before October 3, 2011, shall receive a 2.7%@ 55 retirement benefit; CalPERS “Classic Members” hired on or after October 4, 2011, shall receive a 2% @ 55 retirement benefit; CalPERS “New Members” hired on or after January 1, 2013, shall receive a 2% @ 62 retirement benefit in accordance with the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA).
  • Health Insurance - Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,289.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,724.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave - Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 12 holidays.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance - The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
  • Other - Optional Deferred Compensation Plan, flexible benefits plan, pre-tax childcare plan, employee assistance program, and all other benefits which are received by General employees of the City per Memorandum of Understanding.
