Job Description

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Emergency Operations Group Leader, the Emergency Operations Support Center (EOSC) Operator in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) provides 24/7 support for incident management and coordination. In this role, you will receive, gather, and assess information regarding abnormal or unusual events and emergency conditions across the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), as well as monitor the LANL fire alarm system. Additionally, you will coordinate the deployment of LANL emergency response assets, including Emergency Managers, the Hazardous Material Team, and other specialized teams as required.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Comprehensive demonstrated experience in 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), security, medical dispatching; or another emergency/security service or high consequence field.
  • Extensive demonstrated Knowledge of established procedures for answering multiple radios and telephone lines and providing emergency or critical instructions as appropriate.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, multitasking work environments; with the ability to quickly adapt and prioritize multiple work tasks.
  • Knowledge of potential hazards and proper procedures involved in emergency response to fire, explosions, chemical, radiological, security, and/or natural disaster situations.
  • Knowledge of word processing, computer programs, and other software packages.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal/customer service delivery skills.
Education/Experience at Emergency Management / Response Operator 3 level:

The position requires an Associate Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Studies, Public Safety, Communications, or a related field and a minimum of four years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with DOE Order 151.1D, Comprehensive Emergency Management System.
  • Knowledge of LANL site, organization, policies and procedures, and facility operations.
  • Experience working within the National Incident Management System/Incident Command System.
  • Completion of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) courses.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.


Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
