Join to apply for the ELEVATOR MECHANIC role at University of Alabama at Birmingham Job Description To perform preventive maintenance and repairs on designated passenger and freight elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and moving sidewalks according to schedule and in accordance with industry safety practices. Responsibilities include troubleshooting defective equipment, making repairs, responding promptly to service and callback requests, and ensuring all duties are performed following established protocols and safety standards. The role also involves data collection, reporting, training, and supervising elevator mechanic assistants. Additionally, the technician may be asked to complete the NAEC CETTM training program based on department needs. Essential Job Functions Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of elevators and equipment rooms, including cleaning generators, motors, controllers, hoistway doors, tracks, sills, and elevator cars. Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory. Conduct scheduled inspections, make adjustments, replace parts, and perform safety tests in compliance with codes. Perform electrical system maintenance, including replacing lights, contacts, coils, fuses, motors, wiring, and other components. Maintain mechanical systems, replacing door rollers, belts, cables, and repairing door assemblies and leveling apparatus. Respond promptly to elevator breakdowns and emergencies, with a maximum response time of one hour. Guide and oversee the work of elevator mechanic assistants and assist other department personnel with repairs and projects. Gather data, complete reports, and participate in ongoing training and certifications. Interact professionally with customers, visitors, students, and staff. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Skills Ability to perform basic electrical and mechanical work. Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings. Adherence to safety standards and troubleshooting skills. Strong communication skills and ability to work independently or in a team. Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures. Requirements Associate's degree in a related field and two years of experience, or equivalent work experience. Valid Elevator Mechanic’s License by the Alabama Department of Labor. Valid U.S. driver’s license, minimum 21 years old, with at least three years of driving experience and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record. Physical capability to perform the duties described. Additional Information Starting hourly rate: $32.25 - $48.42, commensurate with experience. Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (subject to change).
