Our educational services organization is committed to supporting deaf and hard of hearing students through comprehensive sign language interpreting delivered by certified professionals. We provide interpreting services that ensure students receive full communication access while maintaining the linguistic and cultural connections essential for their academic and social development.
This Sign Language Interpreter position focuses on delivering comprehensive interpreting services to deaf and hard of hearing students with diverse communication needs through our established educational support system. You'll work with a caseload of 42-52 students across various grade levels while providing 36-37 hours of weekly services including direct interpreting, preparation time, and collaborative consultation.
Your work will center on facilitating accurate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and the hearing educational community while supporting full participation in academic and social activities. The role requires expertise in American Sign Language, English, and educational interpreting techniques to ensure students receive optimal linguistic access throughout their educational experience.
As an Educational Sign Language Interpreter, you'll provide simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during classroom instruction, facilitate communication during student assessments and evaluations, and support participation in school-wide activities and events. Your responsibilities include preparing content-specific vocabulary and terminology, collaborating with teachers to optimize visual access conditions, and maintaining professional interpreter role boundaries while advocating for student needs.
You'll interpret during IEP meetings, parent conferences, and team consultations, maintain confidentiality regarding all educational information, and participate in continuing education to enhance interpreting skills. Additional duties include coordinating with deaf and hard of hearing education teachers, providing input on student communication access needs, documenting interpreting services provided, and staying current with educational practices and terminology across various academic subjects.
Candidates must possess a minimum 3.5 EIPA score and have completed 2 years of interpreting experience in school environments. Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language and English is required, with proven competency in educational interpreting practices, classroom management awareness, and professional ethics.
Essential qualifications include understanding of deaf culture and educational approaches, knowledge of child development and learning processes, ability to interpret across diverse academic subjects and age groups, and strong communication skills for collaborating with educational teams. Experience with both individual and group interpreting situations, along with basic technology skills for virtual interpreting when needed, are important for this role.
We strongly prefer candidates holding 4.0 EIPA scores, Written EIPA certification, and RID/NIC certification with written examination completion. Additional preferences include experience interpreting for various communication modalities, familiarity with assistive technology applications, and background in inclusive educational practices.
