Duties

Responsibilities
  • Investigate crimes scenes by responding to and visually inspecting burglaries, homicides, suicides, robberies, thefts, sexual assaults, and recovered stolen vehicles
  • Based upon specialized training and/or experience, conducts a methodical evaluation and prioritizes collection and processing of evidence while maintaining a proper chain of custody and evidence integrity as per directives of the American Society of Crime Laboratories Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board
  • Assist detectives, prosecutors, or members of the jury in the event the case goes to trial
  • Responsible for testifying in a professional manner at judicial proceedings as to the methodology and evidence disposition regarding crime scenes
  • Recover friction ridge detail by preserving using various powders, proper chemical sequencing and equipment including alternate light sources and forensic photographic procedures
  • Collect and preserve physical and biological evidence by securing blood, body fluids, hair, fibers, firearms, and clothing obtained from crime scenes and autopsies for laboratory analysis and courtroom presentations
  • Protect from biohazards by proper use of personal protection (PPE), proper packaging
  • Verify subjects through verification of prints to establish any arrest records or to determine identity
  • Responsible for writing technical reports and detailing actions taken at crime scenes.
  • Process any evidence collected at scene by officers and submitted to the Forensics Lab for processing
  • Establish a permanent record of crime scenes by preparing accurate computer aided sketches, diagrams and applying specialized photographic techniques utilizing various cameras, video, and lighting equipment to capture evidence such as footwear, tires, patent prints, tool marks, etc
  • Monitor vehicle maintenance as well as repairs, as needed
  • Assist public with fingerprinting services, and applicant fingerprinting for background investigations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree
  • One year (1) of experience preferred but not required. This position is open to entry-level applicants.
  • A combination of education and pertinent experience may be considered
  • Must obtain a TCIC/NCIC less than full access certification within 180 days of hire
  • Must obtain First Aide/CPR certification within 1 year of hire
  • IAI Crime Scene certification highly preferred
  • Must be able to pass a police background
  • A valid driver's license is required. Successful out of state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
  • Crime scene certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI) preferred.

  • Ability to work in inclement weather, rough/steep terrain, and other adverse conditions.
  • The ability to work alone or in small groups and complete tasks with little to no direct supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with people at crime scenes (including citizens and victims of crime or their family members) with courtesy, tact, and professionalism.
  • Ability to safely operate crime scene vehicles (Texas driver’s license required) and a variety of equipment.
  • Ability to work extended hours with little or no advance notice
