After School Tutor - IDPL (Adult Education)

Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION The After School Tutor reports to the Family Literacy and After School Program Senior Manager and is responsible for carrying out the learning activities created by the Curriculum Coordinator for the Afterschool program (grades 2nd through 8th); following attendance procedures; and attending training and professional development meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Carry out Learning Activities (learning games, reading, math tutoring, and free play with children in grades 2nd through 8th, as prepared by the Curriculum Coordinator.
- Attend field trips, library visits, and other activities with families outside of the classroom as needed.
- Assist with parent meetings as needed.
- Follow registration, discipline, and attendance protocols.
- Maintain the instruction area in optimal condition; according to the program’s safety and educational guidelines.
- Carry out job-related duties as may be directed by the Family Literacy and After School Program Senior Manager.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, team members, and the public.
- Adhere to the position schedule; which includes a base schedule for direct instruction of Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., with some occasional weekends
- Show enthusiasm to assist students and their parents.
- Attend no less than 95% of scheduled classes.
- Partake in ongoing professional development as indicated in employee evaluations.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma.
- 1-year minimum experience working with children.
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.
- Able to work with a wide variety of people.
- Team player and willing to take on multiple tasks at once.
- Independent worker requires minimal supervision.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills.
- Above average customer service attitude.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
- Dependable and punctual.
- Ability to adhere to deadlines.
- Able to swiftly and efficiently react to unpredictable events.
- Resourceful when working with the students
- Knowledgeable with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing, some lifting (under 30 lbs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
